Since 2001 a new core curriculum (U2000), has been in operation at the Medical Faculty at Umeå University. After 4.5 years of studies at the faculty, during the 10th semester (T10), the course “Neurology, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology and community medicine” is given. The different topics are taught in a more integrated fashion and student activity is encouraged.
During each T10-semester up to 80 students are educated. The students are divided into two parallel groups starting with different sections/topics. The ophthalmology part corresponds to about four weeks of full time studies. During the first week basic ophthalmology and methods of ophthalmological examinations are taught. Thereafter the students treat ophthalmological patients under the supervision of the clinical assistants and/or associate/assistant professors.
At the end of the term (T10) there is an oral integrated examination of all course sections.
